MUSICIANS INDUSTRY PERSONNEL FANS FAMILY MEMBERS
Rock musicians attract attention for their talent and are
often made out by fans and the media to be “larger than
life”. They seem to
gain notice for negative and perceived stereotypical behaviors. While
people
tend to think that creative people are drawn to their fields because of
an
inherent pathological nature, it seems like little to no attention is
paid to
the effect that their lifestyle plays in creating or exacerbating these
behaviors. To what extent do interactions with the industry, a touring
lifestyle,
and pressure and expectations from fans contribute to the rock
musician’s
stress? That is what this study has set out to explore—the
dynamics between
industry, fans, the musician, and his or her own sense of identity.
Along with
this, examining how musicians typically deal with stress and how they
feel
about their occupation and life in general are included factors. With
these
results, a goal is to devise better and more professionally specific
ways for
musicians to keep themselves emotionally and psychologically healthy.
Additionally, the information will be used to promote understanding
between
musicians and their fans. While drug and alcohol use will be addressed,
it will
be done in relation to the other topics and not be a focal point,
unless the research
warrants further attention.
The study consists of a questionnaire containing
scaled and
open-ended questions covering a wide
range of
topics. All results will be held
strictly confidential
and will be used to increase understanding and awareness of specific
characteristics
and ways of coping. Specialized surveys for music industry
professionals,
family members, and fans are also available to gather information about
their
perspectives on rock musicians’ personalities and lifestyle.
Musicians are often revered and seen as role
models, and the
intention of this research is to bring to light the realities of the
lifestyle
they lead and what being a professional or aspiring musician is
actually like,
without glorification and glamour.
